Radiosurgery

Extreme precision is required when treating tumours with difficult access, especially in the head area. If there are important organs in the immediate vicinity of the affected area, radiation treatment must be applied to the diseased region of the body as precisely as possible in order to protect the surrounding tissue. At our WEGE MVZ, we specialise in this challenge and, with our team of interdisciplinary experts from neurosurgery, neuroradiology and neuro-oncology as well as cutting-edge medical technology, we ensure the best chances of success. The close connection to the neighbouring WEGE KLINIK enables rapid interdisciplinary exchange in order to plan and implement the best therapy for you.

Our experts for your health

Quote from PD Dr Azize Boström:

"The more complex a case is, the more important it is to be able to rely on a team of experts who can pool their expertise and many years of practical experience. We can always do so here at the WEGE MVZ - also thanks to the direct connection to the WEGE Klinik."

Quote from Prof Jan Boström, MD:

"As a neurosurgeon and radiotherapist, I know how important interdisciplinary treatment is, especially for patients with brain tumours. At the WEGE MVZ for radiotherapy and neurosurgery and in collaboration with the WEGE Clinic, we have been optimally implementing this in the interests of our patients for many years."

Typical clinical pictures in radiosurgery

In the radiosurgery department at WEGE MVZ, we treat benign and malignant tumours, especially in the head area. These include meningiomas, neurinomas and brain metastases. To ensure the best treatment, we work together with specialists from various fields.

Our treatment in radiosurgery

In contrast to conventional radiotherapy, in which the affected areas of the body are irradiated successively over an extended period, radiosurgery is a one-off procedure in which a high dose of radiation is directed at the tumour with maximum precision in order to destroy it.

This is possible due to the use of state-of-the-art medical technology in our treatment centre and the adjacent WEGE KLINIK. With their help and the experience of our team of experts, precision can be achieved in the sub-millimetre range, in other words to less than 1 millimetre.

The procedure for radiosurgery

1 Treatment preparation

Before we carry out your radiosurgery treatment, we will work with you to carefully plan the procedure, taking into account both your medical history and your current physical condition.

For this we need:

  • All findings already received, such as letters, operating theatre reports, pathology findings, etc.
  • MRI and CT images (on CD or with valid barcode)

We then work with a multidisciplinary team of experts to determine which treatment is suitable for you and set a date for it together with you.

2 Treatment

As radiosurgery is an extremely precise form of radiotherapy, for your treatment you will be carefully positioned in a customised head mask in order to direct the radiation precisely at the tumour and prevent movement during therapy. Our precise positioning system monitors you all the time while radiotherapy is taking place and is adjusted to the smallest deviations so that the positioning can be corrected at any time. Treatment is completed after just a few minutes.

3 Follow-up treatment

Following your treatment, we will discuss what you should pay particular attention to in the short term in order to give your body the rest it needs to regenerate. We will also arrange a follow-up appointment to monitor the results in the long term.

Your advantages in the WEGE MVZ

Our patients benefit from the direct connection of our MVZ to the WEGE KLINK. With the specialists based there and the excellent medical technology (such as the state-of-the-art linear accelerators), precise diagnoses and the best forms of treatment are possible. In addition to direct communication with the WEGE KLINIK, we are also in constant contact with external clinics, enabling us to pool expertise and make quick decisions.

Close networking with the WEGE KLINIK also ensures that we can optimally coordinate your entire treatment plan right from the start. The short distances and direct coordination with the specialist staff create clarity about time scheduling, vacancy location, and the focal points of your treatment. This avoids unnecessary tests and, in a best-case scenario, significantly reduces the duration of your treatment. So, you can return to your everyday life as quickly as possible.

Physiotherapy exercises are often carried out during or after cancer treatment to support the therapy and prevent immediate treatment aftereffects such as oedema or restricted mobility. At WEGE MVZ, we collaborate with expert physiotherapists who specialise in the specific needs of oncological patients, thus enabling you to receive optimal treatment.

Our patients‘ health is our top priority. Every one of our daily actions is geared towards this goal. To ensure this, we continuously take part in further training to keep abreast of the latest medical developments. In addition, regular internal and external quality controls provide a consistently high level of treatment that you can rely on. We are proud that our quality management system is officially certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.
